Imouzzer des Ida Outanane

Imouzzer des Ida Outanane and the valley of paradise

Located at the extreme west of the Atlas and about sixty kilometres from Agadir, the Imouzzer valley is famous for its lightly peppered honey, its almonds and its waterfalls. Moreover in the Berber language, Imouzzer, plural of “amazzer”, means waterfalls.

Imouzzer is the capital of the Berber confederation of the Ida Outanane who were described in 1811 as intrepid warriors by James Grey Kackson a British merchant settled at Essaouira in the early 20th century and author of work on the Maghreb. The Ida Outanane did not join the Makhzen, the central power, until 1927.

Ida Outanane honey

Nestled at an altitude of 1160 m and 65 km from the Atlantic Ocean, Imouzzer des Ida Outanane is a village with white houses presiding over a palm grove in which beekeeping is one of the main activities of its inhabitants.

Nicknamed the”valley of paradise”, this one produces in its immense apiaries about 120 tons of this honey famous in all Morocco.

Apart from the weekly souk which is held every Thursday, many roadside shops offer honey packed in jars of different quantities. Among the honeys of thyme, lavender, all flowers or prickly pears, that of thyme, the rarest and most sought after, is the most expensive.

Discover the Paradise Valley

In this relief which is distinguished by high limestone plateaus carved with gorges with varied vegetation, the road (P1001) follows the Tarhat river between large rocks and bunches of date palms.

Past the gorges formed by the river, it leads to a fertile plateau dotted with small palm groves. The villages with typical stone houses and flat roofs that follow one another along these mountain oases are hung on the rocky walls.

The waterfalls of Imouzzer

They are 4 kilometres from the village. It is reached by following a road that goes down between restaurants and small shops offering fossils and jewels. Much more interesting is the path that starts at the ford to meander through cultivated plots dotted with date trees, olive trees and almond trees.

It is especially in winter that it is necessary to go there to fully enjoy this small Eden, because at this time if it rains enough that the waterfalls abound with water. The waterfalls then flow on several levels by flowing on steep rocky walls.

The largest and most attractive of them, smoothed and whitened by the limestone deposit of the waters, is nicknamed the “veil of the bride”. Natural basins alternate with waterfalls to transform themselves into pools of fresh and clear water sometimes dominated by diving rocks. In spring, and especially in summer, the waterfalls are mostly dry.

The fossils

Covered by the ocean about 70 million years ago, the region has kept many relatively easy to discover marine fossils from this Cretaceous period on nature walks on the surrounding mountain paths.

Go to Imouzzer

Imouzzer is located about sixty kilometres northeast of Agadir. Only 60 km separate the village from the Atlantic coast (Cape Ghir).

By car

From Agadir, take the road N1 along the ocean towards Essaouira, then just before the Tamrhakht wadi, take on the right the secondary road P1001 leaving towards the villages of Oulma, Aksri and Immouzzer.

This picturesque road, lined with argan trees and small date palms, winds through Atlas foothills with interesting geological folds. After Oulma, the road crosses the river that feeds a vast mountain palm grove decorated with typical villages.

By bus

A daily departure in the early afternoon from Agadir bus station. In the direction Immouzer-Agadir, one departure every morning. The journey takes about two hours. Large taxis also shuttle.
