Todra Gorges
Impressive gorges in the Todra Valley
At 15 km from the centre of Tinghir, gateway to the High Atlas, the villages of Tamtatoucht and Imilchil, the Todra gorges, high limestone cliffs that seem like a fault dug by the wadi Todra for millennia, impress with their spectacular peak plunging down to the river bed.
With peaks rising up to 300 metres above the Todra, which winds its way from its source in the High Atlas Mountains, the Todra gorges occupy a primordial place in the valley.
On the one hand, by protecting the course of the river Todra, which feeds the palm grove over several tens of kilometres, but also by their symbolic function and identity for the population, well aware that the geographical position of Tinghir is often defined in this natural and unique work.
The gorges are also an important point of contact between the valley and the high mountains of the High Atlas. In spite of this economic contribution, the Todra gorges suffer a certain degradation, both human and natural, caused by the strong bad weather that causes floods and floods of the Todra.
From the gorges of the Todra, numerous hikes from the stroll of a few hours around and in the palm grove, to the trek of several days are proposed.
Tizgui overlooking the palm grove at the entrance of the gorges. Kasbahs and palm grove towards the gorges. Panorama at the exit of the Todhra gorges. Climbing trail to Agart Noro Pass.
Walks around the Todra gorges
From the exit of the gorges, in the direction of Tamtatoucht, a path climbs on the left up to the Agart Noro pass at 2 100 m of altitude, an ascent of one hour. Exceptional view on the hamada of the South atlastic furrow in the south, and the peaks of the Todra valley on both sides.
Continuing on the left, a path goes down little by little, coming close to a camp of a nomadic family who will be happy to offer tea. Sugar, tea or fruit are welcome, knowing that during the summer they return to the peaks of the High Atlas where temperatures are milder.
From there, the path goes up the pass just behind which a path replaces the path. It offers the possibility to join the village of Tizgui below on the left.
It is possible to spend the night in one of the guest houses of the village or to join the city by taxi. From the gorges of Todra to Tizgui by this path, count 3 hours of walk.
Turn right to Azlag and the “Source of sacred fish”. The trail goes around the small mountain and descends to a riverbed. Arriving at Azlag, on the other side of the road, from where taxis take a taxi ride between Tinghir and the Todra gorges, the palm grove paths also lead to Tinghir.
We strongly advise you to go through them, to discover its century-old kasbahs along this garden of Eden. From the gorges du Todra to Azlag there is a 4 to 5 hours walk and 2 to 3 hours more to reach Tinghir by the palm grove.
