Skoura

Skoura, At the Beginning of the 1,000 Kasbahs Road

Skoura is the first stop on the 1,000 kasbahs road between Ouarzazate and Tafilalet. According to legend, it was founded in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty.

The palm grove takes its name from the Berber tribe that lived there at that time, the Haskourene. Since then, several populations have followed one another, including the Arab tribes from the Tafilalet, making Skoura an Arab territory in the Berber country.

If Skoura, modest and discreet, does not leave an everlasting memory and does not stand out from these small towns along the road of a thousand kasbahs, it is quite different from its vast palm grove with cultivated crops, the rich historical past and the ancient buildings often restored and famous for some.

The palm grove of Skoura is a real labyrinth, about 50 km², usable by car as well as on foot. Palms, olive trees and almond trees shelter from their shadows, according to the course of the sun, the arid paths leading to the houses of earth, some of which date from the seventeenth century.

It is a charming stage before continuing, not far from there, towards the valley of almond trees, the valley of roses, as well as the gorges and valleys of Dades and Todra.

Here as elsewhere the guest houses (often kasbahs) offer a table d’ hôte for those who live within their walls. Also, some restaurants on the main road, most of which are open only during the day, offer omelettes and tagines.

Skoura palm grove

The Skoura oasis consists of a group of small adobe villages and kasbahs connected by a patchwork of narrow paths and paths bordering the crops in the shade of numerous palm trees and fruit trees.

The walks, here numerous, can be done on foot or on the back of a donkey, by bicycle or on horseback, however it is advisable to be accompanied in this open-air maze. Within the palm grove, a few families have lived for generations the art of pottery to produce jars, tajines and canoes sold at the souks of the region and around the main road. A cooperative produces goat cheese in the Skoura palm grove.

Within the palm grove, the numerous palm trees, but also olive and almond trees planted the decoration in harmony with the kasbahs, some of them dating from the 17th century. These adobe fortified constructions are numerous here, and often can be visited.

Kasbah Amerhidil

The kasbah Amerhidil impressive for its size was built by the master of the Glaoui Qur’ an in the seventeenth century.

The visit to the inner courtyard and apartments makes it possible to understand some of the rules of community life in such a building: the 5 windows of the prayer room symbolizing the 5 pillars of the Qur’ an; the 4 towers used by the 4 women of the master of the place. A small museum presents objects of daily life from the period and an olive press.
