Rissani, The Alaouite cradle at the gates of the desert
A holy city and cradle of the Alaouite dynasty whose royal family came out, Rissani, with its rich souk full of craftsmanship and its magnificent ksour in and around the city, invites us to discover its charms and its Saharan atmosphere.
In the city many monuments and places to visits are scattered, including the Alaouite mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif. Most services and shops are in the center of the town; this part of the city is easy to explore and where the cafés and restaurants serve the classic tagines, omelettes and especially the medfouna, specialty of the Tafilalet region. It is a bread stuffed with minced meat, poached eggs, onions and slightly spicy … a delight!
At the edge of the road that connects Rissani to Erfoud, a few B & B’s kasbahs serve beers and wines to the visitors… But becareful and drink gently…Sun beats in this region!
Souk of Rissani
This every day souk becomes more alive on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Located in the city center, it splits into several sectors: dates of Tafilalet, vegetables, spices, animals, cloth and craft. The rest of the week is mainly a permanent souk where the craftsmanship of the south is amply represented.
Ksour of Rissani
The Ksar Moulay Ismail, built in the seventeenth century, is relatively well preserved, unlike the vast ksar Abber, more recent (late nineteenth century), but unfortunately badly preserved. It is nevertheless an interesting visit, representative of the architecture and organization of social life within a ksar.
Mausoleum Moulay Ali Cherif
The mausoleum Moulay Ali Cherif, founder of the Alaouite dynasty, originally built in 1966/1967 was destroyed during a violent flood of the river Ziz in 1965 and immediately restored.
Even though the sacred precinct and the adjoining mosque are forbidden to non-Muslims, the patio is accessible to all from 9 am to 6 pm every day.
Ksar El Fida
4 km north of Rissani, the El Fida ksar houses an imposing Alaouite kasbah dating back to the mid-19th century. This kasbah, which has been converted into a museum since 2005, is visited every day from 9 am to 6 pm, carpets, objects of everyday life, and portraits of the Alaouite dynasty in the painted ceilings surrounding the huge patio. Entry 10 Dh.
Tourist tour … or rather historical
This circuit of about twenty kilometers shows a part of the palm grove as well as the ksour of Ouirhane, Tabassamt, Irara, Zaouïet el Maati and Asserhine.
Signposted by a ‘tourist circuit’ sign, we prefer ‘historical circuit’ … Do not miss to take the road after the ksar of Ouirhane, on the right, it leads to the ksar of Tinrheras (4 km), a wonder on a rocky promontory. Coming from Erfoud, the circuit is signaled before the entrance of Rissani, on the right. The road is practicable in a tourist car on the entirety of this loop.
Merzouga and the dunes of erg Chebbi
If you come to Rissani, it’s also to reach the erg Chebbi, about 35 km, better known as the dunes of Merzouga.
It is the tourist lung of the region, attracting a growing number of travelers. In the heart of a black desert stands a series of superb sand dunes with orange tones.
Some of them can reach heights of nearly 150 meters. Camel excursions make it a favorite place for many travelers.
The main mail post office is located in front of the hospital on National Road 13 through Rissani. It’s very close to banks and just in front of the souk. The city also has several cybercafés …

Most of Rissani’s accommodations are located outside the city on the road to Erfoud. In town you will find a simple hotel near the souk, economical and convenient in case of arrival at night.

Ksar Ouled Abd El Halim, Rissani …
A good opportunity to admire the interior architecture of an ancient Kasbah. An impressive well of depth, beautiful porches and arcades and superb old mosaics. A discovery to be made.
Clip: Rissani, Erfoud and the Tafilalet …
The film begins with a view of Aït ben Haddou, and finally with the palm grove of the Tafilalet and thedunes of Merzouga. Beautiful pictures well filmed for a music video that some will find a bit creepy …
