On the thousand kasbahs road, Kelaât Mgouna is the major access point to the Roses’ Valley. It sits at the southern entrance of the valley, 90 Km east of Ouarzazate. Kelaât Mgouna is a unique combination of scents, orchards and traditional Berber architecture.
Many walks, excursions and visits can be considered from Kelaât Mgouna, this large town is the entrance point to the Roses’ Valley. It shelters numerous old Kasbahs, some of which open to the travelers’ curiosity.
The paths follow the small streams, and are bordered with fruits trees and splendid rose gardens. It is unquestionably a jewel of the area, inebriating and superb when the roses are flowering from mid-April to mid-June.
Paragliding can be practiced from Bou Tharar, located at the end of the valley. This picturesque village even hosts a festival dedicated to this sport mid-November since 2012.
The Roses’ Festival takes place early May. Three days dedicated to this incredible flower, cheered on by parades and traditional music and dances.
During the Roses’ harvesting season, from April to June, the local distilleries open their doors to the public. It is a very interesting visit to learn all about the distillation of the petals, the manufacturing of rose water and its cosmetics derivatives.
The Azlag Daggers are made in a Douar District on the road leading to Boulmane Dades. Inherited from the Berber Jews, this craft remains active in the artisan cooperative. Made with steel blade, the handles are either in poplar or apricot tree wood or bones. The daggers scabbards are richly decorated.
Kelaat Mgouna Practical
Built close to Mgoun Oued, Kelaat Mgouna dominates all the area. From its 1467 m of altitude it offers panoramic views over the Kasbahs and the Roses Valley.
Downtown the rose water factory opens its doors to the public from April to June. The daggers of Azlag factory and the Berber weaving house are open all year round.
As for most of the towns crossed by the main national road in the area, all services, the post office, restaurants, coffee shops and most of local shops will be found around the main street.
For the excursions and walks in the area, there is an office dedicated to the guides, about 1km from downtown in Ouarzazate direction.
Hotels and guest houses in Kelaat Mgouna
The small budget hostels are spread over the main street. The guest houses and Kasbahs radiate around the town, often overhanging the palm grove.
Approximately 95 km from Kelaat Mgouna, Ouarzazate airport offers some direct flights from Paris. It also offers many connections with European cities often with a stopover in Casablanca.
Buses and shared taxis
All buses to and from Errachidia and Ouarzazate make a stop on the main road, just next to the post office.
