Bivouac in the dunes of Merzouga

Do a bivouac at merzouga in the heart of the dunes of erg Chebbi

Quite often we imagine that going to the desert is an inaccessible thing, like a dream, reserved for the only experienced adventurers. This is certainly true, but fortunately there are places, as here in the dunes of Merzouga, which open easily to you.

We arrive at the foot of the dunes of the erg Chebbi, known as the Merzouga dunes, by an asphalt road where the many hostels present offer you the opportunity to experience a camel safari.

The camel driver, after checking that the saddle is properly maintained on the camel, invites you to climb up on the mount which, sitting patiently, waits patiently. The dromedary rises by raising its hind legs causing a tilt forward and finally stabilizes, standing on its four legs. The adventure begins!

A few tens of meters on the reg, flat area of black sand sometimes stony, and finally it is the entrance to the dunes. The caravan driver walks in front of the caravan by guiding the leading camel, the leader of the group, by a rope.

In a nonchalant step, the camelid bypasses the dunes and gradually sinks into the heart of this immense stretch of golden sand. It is quite possible to stop and walk following the convoy.

Finally it’s the arrival at the camp. The camel driver after having taken care of the dromedaries will prepare the evening meal for you. The evening begins under a fabulously starry sky. The nights on mattresses or camp beds, under the Berber goat hair or camel fur tents and why not under the stars will be of an absolute silence.

The next morning, the sun takes care, gently but surely, to wake you up. Breakfast is the time to come back. The arrival at the hostel will be the long-awaited moment to take a well-deserved shower. In small groups, with friends or family, the desert experience is unique.

Information for a successful bivouac in the dunes of Merzouga

Travelling time at the bivouac, in general, varies from 1 hour 15 minutes to more than 2 hours. Summer departures are usually around 6 pm to avoid the overwhelming heat of the hot sunshine. In winter, when the night, very cold falls early, departures take place around 3 pm.

Make sure to cover your head properly, for example with a goat’s eye, to avoid sunstroke and a waterproof camera bag, the sand slips everywhere and could damage the precious souvenir box.

Prices

As an indication, the price of a bivouac costs 35 € per person for a standard comfort and rises to 60-65 € in its luxury version.

The price includes:

  • The camel
  • Night in tents
  • Dinner at the campsite and breakfast (sometimes once back at the inn).
  • Water
  • A shower on the way back

In conclusion

” To speak of the desert, wouldn’t it be, first of all, to be silent, like him, and to pay tribute not to our vain chatter, but to our silence? “

Theodore Monod.
